What exactly is kambaba jasper?

Although kambaba is called "jasper," it is not actually true jasper. It is a fossil stone composed of stromatolites — rock formed by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). These bacteria lived in layers and died, leaving behind layer after layer of sediment. What remains 3 billion years later is this beautiful green stone with unique black circular patterns.

The stromatolites in kambaba jasper formed in warm shallow seas in Africa. The black and dark green colors come from iron and manganese-containing minerals. Each stone is unique: no two kambaba jaspers have the same pattern formation. This makes it not only a geophysical masterpiece but also a personal statement.

Why is it called jasper if it isn't jasper?

In the mineral trade, kambaba is called "jasper" because it has the same hardness and polishing characteristics as true jasper. In the natural stone world, many names are heritage — they are historically established and difficult to change. What's important: kambaba is authentic, older than almost anything you can touch, and one of the most fascinating fossil stones in the world.

The four characteristics of kambaba jasper

1
Orbicular patterns
The characteristic circles and rings were formed by the cyclic growth of stromatolites. No two stones have the same pattern distribution.
2
Billions of years old
Kambaba was formed during the Archean Eon, long before animals evolved. You are literally wearing a piece of prehistory.
3
Durable color
The green-black color is inherent to the rock itself and does not fade in sunlight or through daily wear.
4
Selection process
We only choose beads with clear, symmetrical patterns. Dull or damaged beads are not used.

Kambaba jasper versus similar stones

When comparing kambaba jasper with other green stones, there are some clear differences. Here's how kambaba stands out:

Stone Color Hardness Special property
Kambaba Jasper Dark green with black rings 6.5–7 3 billion years old, fossil with orbicular patterns
African Turquoise Bright blue-green 6–6.5 Can fade in sunlight; warmer tone
Malachite Bright green with bands 3.5–4 Much softer; bands are concentric, not orbicular
Green Aventurine Softer, dull green 7 No pattern; more uniform in color

Kambaba distinguishes itself by its age and unique pattern formation. Many other green stones are younger and do not have the same characteristic circles. If you are looking for something with real history and character, kambaba jasper is a strong choice.

How we select kambaba jasper in our studio

In the Stoney studio, we go through a strict selection process. We only work with suppliers in Madagascar and South Africa who guarantee responsible sourcing. Each batch of raw material is examined by our team for:

  • Color and pattern sharpness: We only select beads with clear, high-contrast patterns that truly stand out.
  • Physical integrity: No cracks, chips, or raw spots. Each bead must be perfectly smooth.
  • Size consistency: For 8mm beads (our standard for kambaba), we maintain strict measurements.
  • Naturalness: No treated, bleached, or artificially enhanced material.
  • Durability: We test how the beads perform in sunlight and during daily wear.

This means that many batches are rejected. But what you get is pure quality. That's why our customers leave over 1,800 reviews with an average rating of 4.8 stars — they feel the difference.

How to wear and combine kambaba jasper

Kambaba jasper is versatile. It works solo as a statement piece, but it truly becomes magical when you combine it with other stones. Here are three of our favorite combinations:

Kambaba does not like to be alone. It shines when combined with stones that offer contrast in color or texture.

Caring for Kambaba Jasper

Kambaba jasper is durable and low-maintenance. With minimal care, it will retain its beauty for years. Here’s how to best care for it:

Care Recommendation
Cleaning Rinse under lukewarm water with mild soap. Do not use chemicals or abrasive cloths.
Drying Pat dry with a soft cloth. Do not let it dry in direct sunlight.
Storage Store in a dry place. A cotton pouch helps keep dust away.
Sunlight Kambaba does not fade in sunlight, so you can wear it without worry.
Chemicals Avoid prolonged contact with soap, shampoo, and sweat. Rinse your bracelet after swimming.

6mm versus 8mm: Which size to choose?

Kambaba jasper looks best at 8mm. At this size, the orbicular patterns are clearly visible — you can really see all the details of the fossils. The 8mm beads also give a chunkier, more statement-making appearance that perfectly matches Kambaba's strong character.

If you have smaller wrists or prefer a more subtle look, 6mm is an option. But honestly: for Kambaba, we recommend 8mm. The patterns are what make this stone special, and at 8mm, they truly sparkle.

Our honest opinion

Kambaba jasper is not for everyone. It is a serious, dark stone with real history. If you want your bracelet to be light, cheerful, and summer-proof, take a look at our guide to choosing the right stone. But if you want to wear something billions of years old, something that respects fossilized processes, and is truly unique — Kambaba is your stone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kambaba Jasper really a fossil? +
Yes. Kambaba consists of stromatolites, which are fossils of cyanobacteria. It is not a pseudofossil — it is true lithified fossils formed billions of years ago. This makes Kambaba one of the oldest wearable stones.
Can I wear Kambaba Jasper 24/7? +
Yes. With a hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, Kambaba is durable enough for daily wear. However, remove the bracelet before swimming or showering. The elastic will last longer if you avoid the stone being continuously wet.
Why is Kambaba Jasper more expensive than other green stones? +
Two reasons: (1) It is older than almost all other stones, which creates high demand. (2) Real Kambaba jasper with clear patterns is scarce — much material is rejected due to poor quality or faint patterns. We only select the best, which justifies the price.
Does the pattern vary per bead? +
Absolutely. No two beads are identical. The orbicular patterns form randomly within the rock. This makes every Stoney bracelet unique — you never wear the same stone twice.
How do I distinguish real Kambaba Jasper from fake? +
Real Kambaba has interrupted, organic orbicular patterns — the black rings are not perfectly round but follow natural fossil growth. Fake Kambaba often has repeatable, very symmetrical patterns that appear artificial. Also: real Kambaba feels warm to the touch (it absorbs body heat), while fake stays cold. Always buy from trusted sources.
