Stone Nature: What Makes Natural Stones Special
Obsidian is volcanic glass. Not a stone, not a crystal. Glass formed billions of years ago when lava cooled so quickly that it had no time to crystallize. Yet, men love to wear it—because it feels like something ancient, something real, something that carries the essence of the earth within it.
That is the difference between a natural stone and everything that is imitated from it. It's not just about the color. It's about the nature of the material. The history. The weight in your hand. The way light breaks through it or bounces off it.
In this article, we explain what "stone nature" means—and why it matters.
What Is Stone Nature?
Stone nature is the inherent characteristic of a real, natural stone. These are the properties that arise from billions of years of geological processes—pressure, heat, crystalline structures, mineral composition.
Artificial stones are created in laboratories, often within weeks. They are chemically identical to their natural counterparts, but they lack one essential characteristic: authenticity. They have no history. No story of billions of years of formation.
When you wear a natural stone bracelet made of real lapis lazuli or real amethyst, you are wearing a piece of the earth. A fragment of something much larger than yourself. People feel that. That makes all the difference.
The Four Characteristics of Real Natural Stones
Hardness: Explaining the Mohs Scale
An important distinction between stones is their hardness. This determines how durable a bracelet is and how well the material withstands daily wear. We use the Mohs scale—a standard in mineralogy that indicates hardness from 1 (very soft) to 10 (diamond).
| Stone | Hardness | Color | Character | Collection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiger's Eye | 6.5–7 | Golden brown with black stripes | Enduring, power | View |
| Obsidian | 5–5.5 | Black with sheen | Protective, grounding | View |
| Onyx | 6.5–7 | Black | Elegant, powerful | View |
| Lapis Lazuli | 5–6 | Deep blue with golden flecks | Wisdom, truth | View |
| Amethyst | 7 | Purple | Calm, meditative | View |
| Lava Stone | 3–4 | Black with porous structure | Grounding, calming | View |
| Hematite | 5.5–6.5 | Gray to black, metallic | Strength, concentration | View |
| Kambaba Jasper | 6.5–7 | Green with black circles | Balance, growth | View |
A note: Stones with a hardness of 6 or higher are suitable for daily wear. Lower than 5? They require more care, but can still offer great value if you look after them well.
Our Selection Process in Rosmalen
Not every stone from the ground is suitable for a bracelet. We only select stones that meet our standards: good color, correct hardness, no major flaws. This process takes place in our studio in Rosmalen, where our team manually inspects each stone.
We look for stones that:
- Are slightly translucent or have a beautiful luster
- Have no major cracks or scars
- Have an authentic color (not too dark, not pale)
- Feel comfortable in the hand
This selection is why our bracelets feel different from mass-produced items. We care about quality.
Four Stones We Love to Use

"I expected less from an online piece of jewelry, but this feels truly authentic. The weight, the quality. This is what I spent my money on."
— Marco, customer since 2022How to Recognize Real Natural Stones?
The simple test: weight. Real stones feel heavier than artificial ones. They also feel different—rougher, less uniform. An artificial stone feels like plastic. A real stone feels like a fragment of something larger.
At Stoney, we only use natural stones. No treatments, no dyes. What you see is what you get—real, authentic, for good.
Stone nature is more than a buzzword. It's the difference between an accessory you wear and something you carry. A natural stone bracelet is a piece of the earth in your hand. It feels different. It wears differently. And it lasts longer.
