Stoney Bracelets
Since 2019, we have been crafting handmade gemstone bracelets for over 20,000 customers. Each stone is hand-selected in our own studio.

Lava stone is volcanic glass. Not a crystal, not a mineral in the classical sense. It is solidified magma — literally the earth itself, once liquid at over a thousand degrees. Of all the stones we process in our lava stone collection, this is the most raw, the most functional, and the most surprising bestseller.

Why lava stone is different from every other stone

Most gemstones are hard, smooth, and shiny. Lava stone is the opposite. Porous, rough, and matte. That's not a flaw — that's precisely what makes it special. The pores in lava stone absorb liquids. Drip an essential oil on it, and you literally wear scent on your wrist for hours, without the scent overpowering like perfume.

01
Scent Absorption

The only gemstone that absorbs essential oil and releases it slowly. Drip sandalwood, eucalyptus, or cedarwood onto the beads. The scent remains noticeable for 6 to 8 hours.

02
Weight

Lighter than you'd expect from a black stone. The pores make lava stone airy on the wrist. You'll forget you're wearing it — until someone asks what it is.

03
Texture

Rough, organic, palpable. No smooth surfaces. Each bead has a different texture, a different pattern of pores. That makes it visually and tactually interesting.

04
Origin

Solidified volcanic magma. Formation begins at 700-1200°C beneath the earth's surface. After eruption, it cools quickly and retains its porous structure.

6mm or 8mm: which bead size?

With lava stone, the difference between 6mm and 8mm beads matters more than with smooth stones. The texture is more prominently visible at 8mm, and the pores are larger, which absorbs more oil. For men with a wrist circumference above 17 cm, 8mm is the standard choice. At 6mm, the effect is more subtle and the bracelet thinner — better as a second bracelet in a stack.

Combination Guide: What to wear with lava stone?

Lava stone is neutral black and combines with almost anything. But some combinations are stronger than others.

Tiger's Eye
Lava Stone + Tiger's Eye Most Popular Combo

Rough black next to warm golden-brown. The most ordered combination at Stoney Bracelets. The contrast in texture — porous next to smooth — makes this visually stronger than two smooth stones next to each other.

Obsidian
Lava Stone + Obsidian Sleek Duo

Two black stones, but totally different textures. Lava stone is rough and matte, obsidian is smooth and shiny. Together they form a tonal stack that looks more expensive than the sum of its parts.

Hematite
Lava Stone + Hematite Industrial

Hematite has a metallic sheen that contrasts with the matte porosity of lava stone. The combination feels industrial and masculine. Pairs well with a silver or steel watch.

Care for a lava stone bracelet

Lava stone has a hardness of 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale. That is softer than most gemstones. The stone is not fragile, but it does require a little more attention than tiger's eye or onyx.

Do Don't
Take off before showering and swimming Do not wear during intense weight training
Apply essential oil in small quantities Do not spray perfume directly onto the stones
Clean with a soft dry cloth Do not scrub or wash with soap
Store separately from hard stones Do not throw loosely in a bag

Does the elastic break after years of wear? Through our repair service, we restring it. Read more about the care of all stones in our care guide.

"I was skeptical about lava stone. Looked rough in the picture. But in real life, it's the bracelet I wear most often. With a drop of sandalwood, I subtly smell woody all day long."

Our Verdict

Lava stone is the most underestimated stone in our assortment. It doesn't look like a classic gemstone — and that's precisely the point. It's raw, functional, and different. Its scent absorption makes it the only bracelet that does something besides looking good. For men who normally don't wear jewelry, lava stone is often the first step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is lava stone?+
Lava stone is solidified volcanic magma. It forms when lava cools quickly on the Earth's surface after an eruption. This rapid cooling creates the characteristic porous structure with small holes. It is not a mineral in the technical sense, but a volcanic rock.
Can I use essential oil on a lava stone bracelet?+
Yes, that is one of the unique properties of lava stone. The pores absorb essential oil and slowly release the scent for 6 to 8 hours. Use one or two drops — sandalwood, eucalyptus, or cedarwood are popular choices. Let the oil absorb for a moment before putting on the bracelet.
Is lava stone fragile?+
Lava stone has a hardness of 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale. This is softer than most gemstones but not fragile with normal daily use. Take off the bracelet during intense exercise and store it separately from hard stones to prevent scratches.
Which bead size should I choose for lava stone?+
For a wrist circumference above 17 cm, 8mm is the standard. Larger beads show more texture and absorb more oil. For a thinner wrist or as a second bracelet in a stack, 6mm is more subtle and lighter.
What combines best with lava stone?+
The most popular combination is lava stone with tiger's eye: rough black next to warm golden-brown. Lava stone with obsidian creates a tonal black-on-black stack with texture contrast. With hematite, you get an industrial, metallic-colored look. Choose stones with the same color temperature for the strongest result.
