Matte vs Polished Obsidian: Two Faces of the Same Volcanic Glass

The same stone, two totally different faces. Glossy polished obsidian mirrors like dark glass, while matte obsidian absorbs light, appearing almost velvety soft. One Stone, Two Finishes

Obsidian is volcanic glass: lava that cooled so rapidly that no crystal structure could form. We previously wrote a complete article about obsidian, its formation, and its properties. Here, we'll focus on what happens afterward, during the bead's finishing process.

Each obsidian bead is first ground into a smooth sphere. Then, their paths diverge. For a polished finish, the bead is progressively refined and polished until its surface mirrors. For a matte finish, the bead is matted: its surface gains a microscopically fine structure that scatters light instead of reflecting it. So, it's the exact same stone, with a different final treatment.

In a product photo, the difference seems subtle. In daily wear, it is not. These four points determine the character of each finish.

When to Choose Matte, When to Choose Glossy

There is no better or worse finish. However, there is a finish that better suits how and where you wear the bracelet.

How to Stack Matte and Glossy Obsidian

The finish also dictates how you combine. These are the three stacks we most frequently create in our studio using both finishes.

Care: Same Glass, Different Maintenance

Matte or glossy, it remains volcanic glass with a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5. It's more susceptible to scratches than quartz stones like tiger eye, and can splinter if dropped hard. The finish primarily changes what you see and what you need to do.

• Glossy: wipe away fingerprints and skin oils with a soft microfiber cloth to maintain its deep reflection.
• Matte: never polish or treat with a polishing cloth, as this will smooth out the matte texture.
• Both: store the bracelet separately from harder stones to prevent the glass from scratching.
• Both: remove the bracelet during sports and heavy manual labor; obsidian does not like impacts.
• Both: cleaning can be done with lukewarm water and a soft cloth, without cleaning agents.
