Types of Natural Stone Bracelets: The Complete Guide

Not all stones are created equal. In seven years of working with natural stones, we've learned that the choice between obsidian, lava stone, lapis lazuli, or amethyst isn't just about color. It's about hardness, wearability, maintenance, and most importantly: how it feels to wear this stone day in, day out.

This guide explains all 12 most commonly worn natural stones. We compare them based on durability, aesthetics, and practical wearing advice. This is the knowledge we've gained by making thousands of bracelets and seeing how customers live with them.

What you'll discover in this guide are not allegories or marketing statements. This is operational experience with stone. What works, what breaks, what remains beautiful, and what will degrade.

Comparing Hardness: the Mohs Scale

The first question you should ask: how durable is this stone? The Mohs scale measures precision from 1 (very soft) to 10 (diamond). The higher the number, the less likely the stone is to scratch.

Here is the full comparison of all the stones we process:

Stone Mohs Hardness Suitability Maintenance
Lava Stone 3–3.5 Gentle wear Clean weekly
Obsidian 5–5.5 Daily wear Normal maintenance
Lapis Lazuli 5–6 Daily wear Regular cleaning
Hematite 5.5–6.5 Daily wear Normal maintenance
African Turquoise 6 Daily wear Gentle cleaning
Labradorite 6–6.5 Daily wear Soft cleaning
Moonstone 6–6.5 Daily wear Gentle wear
Onyx 6.5–7 Heavy daily wear Minimal maintenance
Tiger Eye 7 Heavy daily wear Minimal maintenance
Amethyst 7 Heavy daily wear Minimal maintenance

Rule of thumb: soft (3–4) is for gentle wear, hardness 6+ can withstand almost anything. This difference matters more than you think — not just for longevity, but for how pleasant a stone is to wear.

How to Choose? 4 Quality Criteria

1
Color & Pattern
Real stones have irregularities. No two bracelets look the same. This is authentic, not cheap.
2
Grain Size
Larger grain feels premium. Small grains tend to feel cheap. We only use 8mm beads.
3
Finish
Smooth, shiny, mirror-like. Our stones are polished to perfection. Rough or dull? Then it's not good enough.
4
Thread Quality
Elastic, strong, durable. Our string doesn't break after two weeks. It lasts for years.

Real stones have character. Irregularity isn't a flaw — it's proof of authenticity.

How We Select Stones

Not every stone sold is good enough. Here's how we work:

1. Physical Inspection
We examine each stone with the naked eye. Is the color vibrant? Are there cracks? Glass-like reflection? The stone must speak directly.

2. Touch Test
We feel the stone. Is the finish smooth? Or does it feel rough? Smoothness is an indicator of quality and how long it will last.

3. Smell Test (for lava stone)
Lava stone should smell neutral. Sour or chemical? Then it hasn't been treated properly.

4. Light Test
Under various light angles, the stone must retain its character. No dulling. No strange reflections.

This process means that 20-30% of all stones we receive don't pass our selection. That's a cost, but it's standard. This is why our bracelets have a reputation.

Our Standard

Not every stone is a Stoney. We select for character, durability, and beauty. This is why our customers wear their bracelets for years.

Wearing Advice Per Stone

Suitable for daily wear (Mohs 6+)
Onyx, Tiger's Eye, Amethyst, Labradorite, Moonstone, African Turquoise, Hematite. You can wear these without worry. They go to the gym, to work, everything.

Careful daily wear (Mohs 5–5.5)
Obsidian and Lapis Lazuli. Less hard, but still durable for normal use. Avoid heavy impact or contact with abrasive surfaces.

For relaxation (Mohs 3–3.5)
Lava stone. Soft. Ideal for people who wear their bracelet at home or with evening wear. Not suitable for sports or heavy work.

Getting marks from wear is normal. Micro-scratches are normal. This is real stone, not plastic. Beauty grows with use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which stone is the most durable? +
Onyx and Tiger's Eye (both Mohs 7) are the most durable. They still look great after years. Lava stone (Mohs 3) is the softest and requires more careful wear.
Can you get natural stone bracelets wet? +
Yes. Obsidian, Tiger's Eye, Amethyst, Onyx, and Hematite can be used moisture-resistantly. Lapis Lazuli and Lava stone should stay dry — they absorb water. Moonstone too: be careful with showering.
How long does a bracelet last? +
With good string and decent maintenance: 3-5 years minimum. The stone itself lasts almost forever. The string wears out faster. We provide free replacement string upon request.
Can I clean my bracelet? +
Yes. Clean gently with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. For hard stones, you can carefully use a soft brush. Avoid chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners — they do more harm than good.
Do gemstones really work? +
This is a personal question. We make gemstone bracelets because they are beautiful, durable, and make a statement. Many customers feel something with their stone. We say: try it yourself.
How do I know which stone suits me? +
Start with what attracts you. Dark? Obsidian, Onyx, Hematite. Color? Lapis Lazuli, Amethyst. Unique? Labradorite, African Turquoise. Quality above all. Your stone will find you.
