Stoney Bracelets - Team

Since 2019, we have been crafting bead bracelets from genuine gemstones in our studio in Rosmalen. In this article, we explain what distinguishes a good bead bracelet from a bad one, what materials exist, and which stone suits which situation.

A bead bracelet is no longer the braided vacation band of yesteryear. In recent years, the bead bracelet has evolved into one of the most popular accessories among men who are conscious of their style. The question is not whether you wear one, but which one. Check out our bead bracelet collection if you want to choose immediately.

Because "bead bracelet" is a broad term. The difference between a plastic bead bracelet and an 8mm obsidian bracelet is comparable to the difference between a polyester shirt and a linen shirt. Technically the same concept. In practice, a different world.

Three types of bead bracelets

Not every bead bracelet is the same. The material determines its appearance, feel, and durability. These are the three main categories:

Material Characteristic Durability Price Range
Gemstone / Natural stone Unique per bead, heavy, cool to the touch Years with proper care €25 - €80
Glass / Ceramic Uniform in color, lighter, smoother Fragile if dropped or pressured €10 - €30
Plastic / Acrylic Perfectly uniform, very light, warm to the touch Short-lived, discolors and scratches easily €2 - €10

We work exclusively with genuine gemstones and natural stones. This is a conscious choice: the material not only determines the look but also the wearing comfort. an 8mm obsidian stone weighs noticeably more than an acrylic bead of the same size. You feel that you are wearing something. And that is exactly what makes a bracelet more than just an accessory.

What we see with our customers

Most customers who order a gemstone bracelet for the first time are surprised by its weight. "Heavier than expected" is the most common remark. That weight is the difference between a piece of jewelry and a trinket. It is also why most customers wear their bracelet every day: you get used to it and you miss it when it's not there.

Which stone suits which situation

The right stone depends on when and how you wear it. These are six common situations with the stone we most recommend based on customer experience:

01
At the office or for business
Obsidian or Onyx

Black is the safest color in a business setting. Subtle, sleek, goes with any shirt and watch.

02
Casual daily
Tiger's Eye

Warm brown-gold tones that work just as well with jeans, a T-shirt, and sneakers as with a dress shirt.

03
With a watch
Hematite

Metallic gray seamlessly matches silver-colored and steel watches. Not too flashy, yet present.

04
As a statement
Lapis Lazuli

Deep blue with golden pyrite flecks. The stone that people always notice and ask about.

05
Minimalist and calm
Moonstone

White-blue with subtle play of light. Suits those who wear jewelry without it screaming for attention.

06
Stacking multiple bracelets
Bracelet set

Combining two or three bracelets works best when the colors are in the same temperature range. Warm with warm, cool with cool.

What to look for when buying a bead bracelet

The market for bead bracelets is large and confusing. These are the four things that differentiate a bracelet you'll wear for years from one that disappears into a drawer after two weeks:

  • Material: real gemstone feels cool and heavy. Plastic feels warm and light. You'll notice the difference immediately
  • Bead size: 6mm is more subtle and slender on the wrist, 8mm is the standard for men and has more presence. We offer both sizes
  • Elastic: cheap bracelets use thin elastic that stretches quickly. We use double-strung elastic that lasts longer
  • Finish: look for the SB-cube, the gunmetal cube with our logo. It is the identifying mark and proof that each bracelet is hand-finished

6mm or 8mm: which size do you choose

Feature 6mm 8mm
Appearance Subtle, refined Present, bold
Wearing comfort Lighter, less noticeable Sturdier, noticeable weight
With a watch Less competing, always fits Stronger presence, choose consciously
Stacking Ideal for two or three bracelets Better as solo or maximum two
Most chosen by Women and men with narrower wrists Men with average to wider wrists

Neither is better. It depends on your wrist circumference, your style, and whether you wear the bracelet alone or in combination. If in doubt: 8mm is the most chosen size by our male customers.

Which bracelet size is right for you

Wrist circumference Recommended bracelet size
15 cm 16.5 - 17 cm
16 cm 17.5 - 18 cm
17 cm 18.5 - 19 cm
18 cm 19.5 - 20 cm
19 cm+ 20.5 - 21 cm

In short

A bead bracelet made of real gemstones is different from a plastic bead bracelet. The difference lies in the weight, texture, color variation per bead, and lifespan. Choose the stone that matches how and where you wear it. Don't know which stone suits you? Obsidian is always the safest first choice for men.

Frequently asked questions about bead bracelets

What is the difference between a gemstone bracelet and a regular bead bracelet?+
A gemstone bracelet is made from real natural minerals. Each bead is unique in color and pattern, feels cool to the touch, and has a noticeable weight. Cheap bead bracelets are often made of plastic, glass, or dyed material. They are lighter, warmer, and more uniform. You will immediately notice the difference when you hold both side by side.
Which bead bracelet suits a watch?+
That depends on the color of your watch. For silver or steel: hematite or obsidian. For gold: tiger's eye. For black: onyx or lava stone. For rose gold: rhodonite. Choose a 6mm bracelet if you wear it next to the watch for a subtle effect, or 8mm if you want the bracelet to be as prominent as the watch.
How many bracelets can you wear on one wrist?+
We recommend a maximum of three on one wrist. More than that can look cluttered and cause the bracelets to rub against each other, leading to wear and tear. Two bracelets is the sweet spot for most people: enough variety without overkill. Combine stones in the same color temperature for a harmonious look.
Can I wear my bead bracelet in the shower?+
We advise against it. Not because most stones cannot withstand water, but because hot water and soap will cause the elastic to wear out faster. Getting incidentally wet is not a problem. Daily showering with your bracelet on shortens the lifespan of the cord.
Which stone is the best choice for a first bead bracelet?+
Obsidian. Black goes with everything, the stone is hard enough for daily use (Mohs 5-5.5) and it is the most neutral color you can choose. We find that most customers who start with obsidian later add a second bracelet in a warmer tone, such as tiger's eye or lava stone.
