Stoney Bracelets
Since 2019 we handcraft natural stone bracelets for 20,000+ customers. Every stone is hand-selected in our own workshop in the Netherlands.

Obsidian is not a stone. It is volcanic glass — forged in seconds when molten lava meets cold air. That rapid cooling is what gives obsidian its razor-sharp fracture, its mirror-like sheen, and its unmistakable weight on the wrist. If you are looking for an obsidian bracelet that actually feels like something, you are reading the right guide.

What Makes Obsidian Different From Other Black Stones

Most people confuse obsidian with onyx. Understandable — both are black, both look serious on the wrist. But the difference is fundamental. Onyx is a mineral. Obsidian is glass. Volcanic glass, formed when silica-rich lava cools so fast that crystals never get the chance to form.

That is why obsidian has a glassy lustre that onyx does not. It catches light differently. It weighs differently. And when polished into 8mm beads, it produces a depth of black that feels almost liquid. At Stoney Bracelets, we offer obsidian in two finishes: polished (high shine, mirror-like) and matte (understated, textured surface). Most customers who want a single everyday bracelet start with matte. Those building a stack lean towards polished for contrast.

01
Volcanic Origin
Formed from rapidly cooled lava — not a mineral, but natural glass with a conchoidal fracture pattern.
02
Two Finishes
Polished obsidian reflects light like a mirror. Matte obsidian absorbs it. Both pair differently in a stack.
03
5 – 5.5 Mohs
Hard enough for daily wear, but avoid drops on hard surfaces — glass fractures, it does not chip.
04
The SB Cube
Every Stoney obsidian bracelet features the gunmetal SB logo cube — the signature detail of the collection.

Polished vs. Matte: Which Obsidian Bracelet to Choose

This is the question we get asked most. The answer depends on how you wear it.

Finish Look Best For Stack Pairing
Polished Obsidian High-shine, reflective, formal Solo wear, dressy outfits, contrast in stacks Tiger eye, lapis lazuli, hematite
Matte Obsidian Understated, textured, casual Everyday wear, layering, subtle styling Moonstone, labradorite, lava

If you only buy one: matte. It disappears into your outfit without trying too hard. If you are stacking two or more bracelets, polished obsidian adds the kind of contrast that makes the entire wrist look intentional.

Best Stone Combinations With Obsidian

Obsidian is the anchor stone of almost every stack we sell. Its neutral black works as a base for virtually anything. But some pairings stand out — based on what our customers actually order together.

Tiger Eye
Gold Tiger Eye + Obsidian Most Popular
The signature Stoney stack. Tiger eye brings warmth and movement; obsidian grounds it. Works with everything from a t-shirt to a blazer.

Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli + Obsidian Bold Contrast
Deep royal blue against solid black. A combination that demands attention without being loud. Best in polished finish for maximum contrast.

Hematite
Hematite + Obsidian Monochrome
Both dark, but hematite has a metallic silver sheen that breaks the monotony. This is the stack for men who only wear black.

Choosing between 6mm and 8mm? 8mm works for most men's wrists; 6mm is better for smaller wrists, layering, or pairing with a thin dress watch. See our complete size guide with wrist circumference table and watch pairings.

How to Care for Your Obsidian Bracelet

Obsidian is durable for daily wear, but it is still glass. A few rules keep it looking sharp for years.

Clean it with a damp cloth and mild soap. No chemicals, no ultrasonic cleaners, no perfume directly on the beads. Store it flat — not hanging, not tossed in a drawer with keys and coins. Remove it before heavy lifting, swimming, or showering. The elastic cord lasts longer when it stays dry.

If a bead chips (rare, but possible with a hard impact), we offer a repair service. Send it back and we restring it with replacement beads. Your bracelet, same stones, fresh elastic.

"The thing about obsidian is that it stays black. It doesn't fade, it doesn't discolour. Five years from now it looks the same as the day you bought it."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is obsidian a real stone?+
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass. It forms when lava cools so rapidly that mineral crystals do not have time to develop. While it is not technically a mineral, it is 100% natural and has been used in jewelry and tools for thousands of years.
What is the difference between polished and matte obsidian?+
Polished obsidian has a mirror-like shine and reflects light. Matte obsidian has a satin texture that absorbs light, giving it a more understated look. Both are the same stone — the difference is purely in the surface finish. We recommend matte for everyday solo wear and polished for stacking.
Can I wear my obsidian bracelet every day?+
Yes. Obsidian scores 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which is hard enough for daily wear. Avoid wearing it during heavy physical work or sports where it could take a hard impact. Remove it before showering to protect the elastic cord.
Which stones pair best with obsidian?+
Our most popular combination is obsidian with gold tiger eye — the warm gold tones contrast beautifully with the deep black. Lapis lazuli adds a bold royal blue accent, while hematite creates a sleek monochrome look. All three are available in our collection.
How do I choose the right size?+
Measure your wrist circumference with a flexible tape measure or a strip of paper. Add about 1 cm for a comfortable fit. Our most popular size is M (18 cm), which fits wrists between 17 and 18 cm. If you are between sizes, go one size up.
